WEDNESDAY RANDOMNESS
You just know there's some Allman Brothers playing in the background. Paw painting is one of Clemson's most well-known traditions and has been going on strong since 1971. I'll write a little more about it later, but for now here are two photos, one from the early-mid 80s and one from 2005, of members of Sigma Phi Epsilon painting the famous Tiger Paws on Clemson's roads and highways.
(I should also mention that the photo below is just a small fraction of current membership, I think SigEp is running about 70-80 strong about now, about 120 or so in membership in the above photo)
Probably O.A.R. this time around.
Two different eras. Your music comparison begs to be continued-
ReplyDelete80's: Alpha's from Revenge of the Nerds
2005: Tri-Lambs
80's: Guy to girl ratio: 4:1
2005: 7:1
80's: Drinks with them
2005: 21 drinking law
80's: Buff, tan guys- probably pulling in lots of leg
2005: Looking like my pale, pasty white ass in college and 40 lbs ago and probably pulling is as much leg as I did in college.
I was thinking the same thing.. except something's not right. That guy 8th from the right looks like he doesn't belong in there with the other tri-lambs:

LOL, that's pretty good. How about the gy in the 80s pic kneeling beside the paw. That's straight up mullitude.
ReplyDeletefdog if I'm not mistaken that's Matt Watkins, also of Tiger Brotherhood and currently head of the University Alumni association.
ReplyDeleteI heard that the surrounding townships aren't allowing paw painting on the roads any longer which eliminates the awe of being led into Clemson by the paws. I am not sure if this is true but from the fading paws on the roads into Clemson, I just thought it to be so. That sucks as that is always a great intro to the "sickness" that is Tiger Pride.
ReplyDeleteAgent Orange, it's not that they're not allowing it necessarily. To paint the Paws on campus, the Student Police are the only people needed. To paint in the city, university cops and Clemson cops usually work together, not a big problem. But when you get to the highways like 123 you have to call the local PD, who usually doesn't want to take the liability and will direct you to the Highway Patrol, who doesn't want to get involved and tells you to call SCDOT who by law can't tell you it's okay to paint the paws, but has always just sort of allowed it under the table. If some local cops would just step in and help it wouldn't be a problem, but red tape keeps the responsibility of blocking off one lane bouncing around from dept. to dept.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the city and uni have paved over so many roads in the immediate Clemson are that SigEps are plenty busy just repainting those paws.
I didn't know Wooderson was a SigEp in the 80's (guy on far right in blue shorts)
