DISCUSS AMONGST YOURSELVES

DFIG reader Harper submitted 3 really good questions he suggested I post for discussion.

1) What is the best college football program to never have won an AP or a UPI/Coaches Poll national title? (not this depression era 6-0-1 shit)

2) What is the best team (single season) to not win the title?

3) Who is the hardest/thuggest Clemson football player ever?

Harper's answers were UCLA (maybe), Miami '02, and Duane Coleman/Brian Dawkins/Leroy Hill.

    1) UCLA yeah, but Texas A&M
    2) Auburn the year they went undefeated and got shafted for the title (03, 04?)
    3) Definitely Duane Coleman or Charles Bennett of recent fame, Levon Kirkland for shades of early 90s.

    1) According to:

    The team with the most wins in that span without a major poll Championship is Arkansas (though they did win a FWAA thing in 1964). UCLA won a UPI title in '54, so that disqualifies them. But then you get to the likes of ASU, Miami (OH), Ole Miss, and S. Miss before you get to A&M. Texas A&M also won an AP title in '39. But that's so long ago that I'm willing to overlook it and agree with Willy Mac that it's Texas A&M.

    2) '94 Penn State.

    3) I'd say Brian Dawkins too.

    1.) I'd have to agree, Texas A&M
    2.) 2004 Auburn, even if they did almost stink it up against Va Tech in the Sugar Bowl.
    3.) Duane Coleman, just the kind of guy I would never want to meet in a dark alley

    In other news, Clemson is adding a new motto for the entire athletic department, some suggestions are as follows:

    Clemson: Hell, at least we're not Dead last.

    Clemson: Almost good enough for second place.

    Clemson: Don't worry, we'll blow it in the end.

    Clemson: at least we're not South Carolina.
